Rebellion PAC Fights Homophobic Smear of Congressional Candidate
Hey everyone,
Brianna Wu here, executive director of Rebellion PAC. I want to tell you about the first race Rebellion PAC is getting involved in and why.
Recently, phony sexual misconduct allegations were cooked up to smear a gay congressional candidate in Massachusetts. It's an important story, because it involves a cynical abuse of the #metoo movement.
A student hoping to work for Alex Morse's establishment opponent ginned up a fake sexual misconduct story. It had the old, homophobic trope of a gay man supposedly seducing 18-year olds.
This was a disgusting lie. And it was eventually disproven thanks to investigative reporting by the Intercept. But what's more disturbing is how the lie was spread in the first place.
UMass Amherst Democrats went to the state party with the fake allegations. They referred the student group to a lawyer, who leaked the story to everyone in sight - permanently harming Morse's reputation.
There have been credible allegations that this unnamed lawyer was linked to Morse's establishment opponent.
If true, this would certainly look like the MA Democratic Party and Morse's establishment opponent were trying to sabotage a gay man with a homophobic smear job.
What we do know is that MA01 congressional candidate Alex Morse has had his reputation harmed permanently. As a woman, I am furious about this. The cynical weaponization of the #metoo movement devastates every person who just wants to be safe at work from sexual predation.
Rebellion PAC is MAXING OUT a donation to Alex Morse today. And we're going to do independent advocacy to try to repair some of the harm done to Alex Morse, most likely with ads and voter turnout efforts.
This will not stand.
Rebellion PAC exists to take on the tough fights Democrats can’t or won’t. Sometimes our goals will be synonymous with our party, such as with our recent national ad encouraging voter turnout. But when we feel the establishment is putting its thumb on the scales to thwart progressive candidates, we’ll be there, too.
